WHAT DOES UNITED WITH PURPOSE MEAN TO YOU?

United with a purpose: For me it means, standing together as one in creating a place in society where my brothers and sisters, can be who they choose to be, without being discriminated, or even killed for trying to live their truth, (being gay). Working as one in bringing awareness around mental health issues that are affecting men from all walks of life. Who mostly can’t even talk about their issues because society has decided men don’t cry, men are supposed to be strong, but truth is men also get depressed and suffer from anxiety which means they need help (mental health support). Standing together in ending the division within the gay community, which I call gayphobia. Transgenders, Lesbians, Bisexuals, etc, we are all the same. If we want society to take us seriously, we can’t be the ones who discriminate against one another. We need to be one and United to fight the injustices committed against the LGBTQ community.

What does United with Purpose mean to me.
For me United with Purpose means to restore the division that has plagued our LGBTQ community for years, to bring back the Pride, to celebrate who we are again because I believe we have lost sight of what we as South Africans truly stand for…that our diversity shouldn’t divide us, together it should unite us.

United with a purpose, is not only unifying with those who share our race, religion or cultural beliefs… but it suggests a coming together regardless of how we view the world for the greater good and greater purpose of preserving a kinder, safer and more equal society for future generations where we all share in the same rights, equality and social opportunities, eliminating class and monitary inequality and coming together to make a brighter future possible for all.

“Being selected as a Top 12 candidate brings a massive smile to my face – it is one step closer to my dream of making a bigger impact in the mental health community and creating a voice for our young LGBTIQA+ Community.” The title lends itself to the great work we can accomplish to eliminate queer and transphobia, address suicide and the alarming increase in queer hate crimes. Being selected means a coming together to unite our voices for a better tomorrow, and an opportunity to become a voice for our young LQBTIQA+ community.

United with a purpose is bring all nations of the world together as one. By inspiring them to spread love, never hate, never to discriminate in any way or form against the human race. As the saying goes Variety is the spice of life. We must learn to embrace one other. Learn from each other and grow as one world with one purpose and that’s to unite through love always.

WHAT DOES UNITED WITH PURPOSE MEAN TO YOU?

First and mostly, we as South African citizens has to understand the word Unity and swift our minds around what the actual meaning stands for. To be united means that we must be joined, together, as a whole.  For me, United with purpose mean that we as individuals has to stand together in order to make South Africa a better place, a better sequence. We have to join each other by hand, in faith, by heart, by nationality and by sexuality. We all have some sort of purpose in life. It’s up to us whether it makes a difference or not. I constantly remind myself that my purpose in life is to inspire, to build up and to not break down, to take off and to motivate each and every LGBTQ individual to take every day on like it’s your last. To overcome and to conquer fear, no matter what the struggle may be. So, if I have to put these two words together, this will be what I personally believe regarding “United with purpose”.

HOW DO YOU FEEL TO BE SELECTED INTO THE TOP 12

“I am extremely proud of what I have achieved and overcome over the past couple of years. Coming out as a LGBTQ individual has been one of the most challenging but yet proudest moments in my life. I was fortunate enough to have had very excepting family and friend circle/surroundings, who excepted me for who and what I was, and still proceed to be. With that being said, this is something I dreamt about for almost 5 years now. I am extremely grateful and beyond blessed with such an incredible opportunity, especially to represent my City in such a prestigious Gay competition. This is who I am. This is what I do and I will presume to do. I want to conquer. I want to take off and I want to make a difference in each and every individual’s life within my community. To be chosen as one of your Top 12 finalists, is a dream come true. I leave you with the following: “Humans are so used to what we know, that when we see something, we haven’t seen before. We automatically feel uncomfortable with it, which is stupid” – Billy Eilish I can relate with this as I feel like South Africa has to understand the new generation of GAY! I have something special on offer within this competition. I have what it takes to be your New Mr Gay World Brand Ambassador. I support myself; I support GAY South Africans!  Thank you so much for your time when reading this. Much appreciated.

Shanon Kannigan, 27 from Benoni, Gauteng

WHAT DOES UNITED WITH PURPOSE MEAN TO YOU?

To me personally “United with a purpose” means where everybody plays a part to overcome a challenge that we are currently facing, where each individual knows the importance of their own role regardless of being big or small. From my experience in life any goal is much easier to achieve when being assisted by others. A great visual resemblance to the phrase “United with a Purpose” is a colony of ants, alone their abilities are limited but if the colony works together, they can achieve abnormal capabilities.
